Nominations Open for West Berkshire Learner Achievement Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2026 Learner Achievement Awards, which celebrate the transformative impact of adult learning across West Berkshire.

The annual awards recognise the achievements of adult learners who have improved their lives through apprenticeships, professional, academic and vocational qualifications, as well as learning programmes that strengthen families, support communities and improve health and wellbeing.

There are eight award categories, recognising everything from outstanding achievement and determination to inspiring others and returning to learning. Individual category winners will receive Β£100, while the Group Learners category offers a Β£500 prize.

One of the awards' most prestigious honours is the Terry Stares Award, which carries a Β£500 prize and recognises the life-changing difference that adult education and training can make to individuals and communities. All nominations will automatically be considered for this award.

Last year's Terry Stares Award winner, Dhana Curties, was recognised for her determination in learning to read through Read Easy West Berkshire. After a difficult period in her life, learning to read helped her regain confidence and independence, enabling her to achieve personal goals including reading to her grandchildren and accessing information independently.

Councillor Heather Codling, Deputy Leader of West Berkshire Council and Executive Member for Children and Family Services, said:

The Learner Achievement Awards shine a spotlight on the incredible determination, resilience and success of adult learners across West Berkshire. Stories like Dhana's show how learning can transform lives, whether it helps someone gain a new qualification, return to employment, build confidence, improve their wellbeing or inspire others in their community.

We know there are many remarkable people whose achievements deserve recognition, and I would encourage residents, employers, learning providers, friends and family members to submit a nomination and help us celebrate their success.

The awards are open to anyone aged 19 or over who has been engaged in learning since September 2025 and who lives, works or volunteers in West Berkshire.

Make a nomination at westberks.gov.uk/laa by 5pm on Friday, 23 October 2025.

Winners, together with a guest, will be invited to a special awards ceremony at Shaw House in Newbury on Friday 6 November 2026 at 5.30pm.

The Learner Achievement Awards are organised by West Berkshire Council on behalf of the Community Learning Partnership and sponsored by Newbury College, the Newbury Community Resource Centre and West Berkshire Training Consortium.
